There are five primary
pieces of apparatus upon which Pilates exercises can be
performed - the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair, ladder barrel
and spine corrector. All pieces require a trained instructor to
lead the participant through a series of exercises specific to
that apparatus.
The Reformer The Reformer was originally created by Joseph Pilates as a way for soldiers in Europe to rehabilitate their bodies while still recuperating from their hospital beds. Joseph began hooking up ropes, pullies and springs to the beds which later became the Reformer. The Reformers used today are modeled closely after Joseph's first pieces used in his New York studio, and are designed with a moving carriage, springs, leather straps and an adjustable footbar, allowing clients to perform exercises lying prone, supine, sitting and standing. The resistance of the springs and straps is what enables most of the strengthening and lengthening benefits of the Reformer exercises.
The Cadillac The Cadillac, which is sometimes known as the Trapeze table, is a large apparatus with poles, springs, a push-thru bar and roll-down bar, trapeze and woolies. This piece of equipment was created to address specific rehabilitative and alignment needs as well as enable deep stretching and symmetrical movement.
The Wunda Chair The Wunda Chair is one of the most challenging pieces of apparatus, normally used as an addition to a regular Pilates routine, but can also be used as the sole piece of equipment during a session. Adjustable springs allow for variation in tension and difficulty. The design enables exercises from many different positions, and can in fact convert to a functional ergonomically-minded chair for sitting. Joseph's famous quote "...the Wunda Chair belongs in every home and hotel in America" explains why he may have designed it for this dual purpose.
The Ladder Barrel The Ladder Barrel, or High Barrel, is the largest of the barrel apparatus, offering a large number of exercise and positioning options. The most commonly performed exercises focus on spinal extension, leg stretches, and sit-ups in all directions. The Ladder Barrel, named simply due to its design of a large barrel on one end and a ladder on the other, enables both gentle stretching as well as very demanding exercises.
The Spine Corrector The Spine Corrector, or Hump Barrel, is one of the smaller barrel apparatus, and is designed to do just what its name indicates - correct imbalances and weaknesses in the spine. Most exercises are performed by lying with your back arched over the barrel portion. The design includes a "V" shape where the barrel and seat connect, simulating the same shape in space as many Pilates exercises such as the Teaser and Hip Circles.
